Suzhou Int'l Expo Center

A New Icon for Suzhou:
A unanimous jury decision in the design competition for the new Suzhou Int'l Exhibition & Conference Center. The unfolding fan concept is an elegant, memorable and clear form for the city renowned for its delicately carved hand-fans. The Center unfolds across the site with the overlapping roofs rising to the west, towards the heart of Suzhou. The stainless steel and glass roofs are supported by arching trusses clad in translucent glass. These arched trusses filter daylight into the halls below and provide spans of 90 meters, which allows for one of the world's largest column-free spaces. The halls are designed to function independently served by prefunction and service areas, or they can be easily linked to expand and accommodate varied space requirements.
